Equine Assisted Psychotherapy

What is equine assisted psychotherapy (EAP)?

  • Working with horses and mental health professionals either individually or as part of a group

  • Enhancing high-quality evidence-based therapy with equine activities that build relationships with horses

  • Treats a wide range of conditions, including PTSD, depression, anxiety and substance misuse

  • Can be combined with traditional talk therapy for those who will benefit

Why participate in EAP?

  • EAP is an exciting alternative to traditional therapy that gets you out of the office, into the natural world, and engaging with your therapy physically as well as mentally.

  • EAP enhances your treatment through relationships with highly sensitive, emotional, and relational animals who provide nonjudgmental support on your healing journey.

  • Working with horses is fun! EAP may include handling horses, brushing and caring for horses, interacting with and observing horses at liberty, and riding.

TERRA’s equine assisted psychotherapy programs are designed and run by a doctorate level clinical psychologist and a medical doctor, and co-facilitated by PATH International Certified Equine Specialists in Mental Health and Learning.

What kind of therapy is right for me?

We recommend group therapy for the majority of clients. Our groups are created to bring together clients with compatible concerns and therapeutic goals. For youth, groups are also arranged by age/ developmental level. Some clients may not feel comfortable with group therapy or may not be able to attend the group session schedule. For these clients, we offer individual sessions (facilitated by both a licensed mental health provider and trained Equine Specialist). If you are unsure about what kind of therapy is most appropriate for you, please contact us. We are happy to talk you through the options and help you make the choice that is right for you.
